Electrical Phase 2 can feel like a lot of information arriving very quickly.

You are moving between calculations, electrical theory, installation work, motor control and practical exercises—often while being assessed throughout the training period.

The answer isn't to spend every evening reading notes.

The answer is to study properly.

Here is a simple system for preparing for Electrical Phase 2 assessments in Ireland.

1. Understand Before You Memorise

Electrical theory becomes difficult when you try to memorise disconnected facts.

Start with the underlying idea.

If you're studying resistance, for example, make sure you understand what resistance actually represents before learning formulas involving it.

If you're studying a control circuit, work out what should happen when each device operates rather than simply memorising where every wire goes.

Understanding reduces the amount you need to memorise.

2. Master the Basic Calculations

Electrical Science is one of the core areas listed within Phase 2 of the national electrical apprenticeship programme.

Calculations are also highly cumulative.

If your basic algebra, units or Ohm's Law calculations are weak, more complicated questions become unnecessarily difficult.

For every calculation:

Step 1: Write down what you know.
Step 2: Identify what the question wants.
Step 3: Choose the correct formula.
Step 4: Rearrange it if necessary.
Step 5: Substitute the values.
Step 6: Calculate the answer.
Step 7: Include the correct unit.

Following the same process every time reduces careless mistakes.

3. Stop Reading and Start Testing Yourself

Reading something repeatedly creates familiarity.

Familiarity is not the same as knowing it.

After studying a topic, close your notes and try to answer questions from memory.

Ask yourself:

  • Can I explain this in my own words?
  • Can I draw the circuit?
  • Can I complete the calculation without looking at an example?
  • Can I identify why each component is there?
  • Could I explain the answer to another apprentice?

If not, go back over the section and try again.

This type of active recall is far more useful than highlighting another page of notes.

4. Mix Theory With Questions

Don't spend five days studying theory and then begin questions.

Instead, learn a small section and immediately answer questions on it.

For example:

Electrical Science lesson → five calculations → check answers → redo mistakes.

This exposes gaps in your knowledge while the topic is still fresh.

It also means that when assessments approach, answering questions already feels normal.

5. Treat Your Mistakes as Revision Material

Keep a simple list of questions you get wrong.

For every mistake, identify why it happened.

Was it:

  • The wrong formula?
  • A calculation error?
  • A unit conversion?
  • A concept you didn't understand?
  • Misreading the question?
  • Forgetting a key fact?

Then redo the question later without looking at the original solution.

Getting a question wrong during revision is useful.

Getting the same type of question wrong five times because you never corrected the underlying problem isn't.

6. Don't Ignore the Practical Side

Phase 2 includes both theoretical and practical learning, including installation techniques and panel wiring/motor control.

When completing practical work, don't operate on autopilot.

Try to connect what you are doing physically with what you learned in theory.

Ask yourself:

What is this component doing?
Why is this conductor connected here?
What should my meter show?
If the circuit doesn't operate, where should I test first?

That habit develops fault-finding ability instead of simply teaching you how to reproduce one exercise.

7. Use a Weekly Revision Routine

You don't need four-hour study sessions every evening.

Consistency beats occasional massive sessions.

A simple week might look like this:

Monday: 30 minutes of Electrical Science calculations
Tuesday: Review that week's installation theory
Wednesday: 30 minutes of calculation questions
Thursday: Motor control or panel wiring revision
Friday: Short review of everything covered that week
Weekend: One longer mixed-question session

Adapt the timetable around your own training-centre schedule.

The important part is that you're constantly revisiting material.

8. Practise Without Your Notes Before an Assessment

In the final stage of revision, remove the safety net.

Attempt questions under realistic conditions without:

  • Notes
  • Worked examples
  • Videos
  • Solutions

Only check your answers afterwards.

This tells you what you can actually produce when you're sitting an assessment.

Don't aim to recognise the answer.

Aim to produce the answer yourself.
